The research programme focuses on the finite element modelling of soft and brittle granular materials and their mixtures. Both continuum and particle models will be considered. The purpose of the particle model will be to derive friction and yield data for inclusion into the continuum representations. The model will focus on particle interaction where each particle will be mapped by a number of finite elements. The friction between the particles will be included as well as accounting for particle hardening due to both material and geometric contributions. The continuum compaction/ejection models will be extended to include rate-dependent behaviour and powder mass acceleration. The utilisation of a compaction model to include multiple phases (hard and soft powders and air) will also be investigated.
