Although the preparation of poly (vinyl acetate) (PVAc) by emulsion polymerisation is extensively practised, there is virtually no fundamental knowledge of the crucially-important processes of chain transfer to polymer and grafting of water-soluble polymer which contribute to the performance characteristics of the PVAc latexes produced. The objective of the present proposal is to make use of powerful modern analytical techniques, in particular NMR spectroscopy, to gain a scientific understanding of these processes. Samples removed from polymerisations will be analysed by NMR to determine the chemistry of the chain transfer and grafting reactions. When the unique NMR resonances associated with the branch and graft points have been established , the effects of polymerisation conditions upon the extent of the reactions will be established and correlated with other changes in properties, including PVAc molar mass distribution and latex rheology. The fundamental knowledge gained will bring new insight into the control of vinyl acetate emulsion polymerisation and the properties of the resulting PVAc latexes, and will be of direct benefit to the UK paints and adhesives industries.
