Summary on Grant Application Form
Current natural Language Processing (NLP) systems have limited capabilities: they can wither analyse text in highly restricted domains where deep understanding is required (for instance database front-ends), or , for unrestricted text, extract only shallow or selective information (for instance keywords and salient phrases for document indexing) which is insufficiently detailed for many potential applications. I intend to develop, integrate and evaluate knowledge-based and statistical techniques with the goal, by the end of the fellowship, of implementing an accurate and robust system for the detailed analysis of unrestricted English text.
