Summary on Grant Application Form
This investigation aims to provide a scientific understanding of how the crystal orientation and microstructure, fibre architecture and pore and microcrack geometry determine the thermal conductivity and thermal expansion of carbon/carbon fibre composites. In a collaborative programme bringing together the complementary expertise in processing at Leeds and thermal property evaluation at UMIST, model CFCs will be fabricated to enable the effects of the above parameters to be systematically elucidated using fibres and materials with different graphitic character and orientation. Microstructural features will be quantitatively characterised and related to thermal properties in a predictive model. The work will benefit UK industry in the design and production of improved materials for existing and new applications. In particular the potential for use of such materials as heat sinks for avionic devices will be opened up.
