Summary on Grant Application Form
At the conceptual stage of the design of steel structures, numerous decisions are made which significantly influence the overall cost of construction by imposing constraints on the later and more expensive stages of fabrication and erection. Designers have traditionally attempted to produce economical solutions by concentrating their efforts on minimising steel weight. This often proves counter-productive in terms of the actual costs of the overall project, since savings in material can easily be lost many times over by increased production and site costs. By developing a computerised system that can guide designers towards design decisions that recognise the consequences of these decisions for the downstream activities, more economical and practicable solutions will result. This project will deliver a prototype system that employs knowledge based expert systems and object oriented technologies to support designers in carrying out construction-led design of steel structures.
