Summary on Grant Application Form
Over the last four years the Instrumental City facility has been developed by collecting together in one place the wealth of traffic and transport related, pollution and meteorological data available from Leicestershire County Council and others. Investment has provided hardware and a manager to liaise with over 70 users of the data. Currently about 20 projects are relying on Instrumental City data over the next three years.Investment by Leicester and Nottinghamshire County Council in roadside pollution monitoring and upgrading of the signal control infrastructure (Leicestershire only) will give considerable benefit to the Transport Research community and to other academics involved with the research into sustainable cities issues, health effect of traffic etc. The work in this proposed research will consolidate the existing essentially traffic database and modify its infrastructure to accommodate the new sources of meteorological and environment data. The database will be populated. Users will be consulted to identify precisely the uses of the data so that the strategy for the database can be specified to meet needs. The relationship of this work with the Sustainable City Research Programme will be employed fully. A new model for financing the running costs of the Instrumental City will be defined and implemented.
