Summary on Grant Application Form
Work is currently underway to measure the force of attraction between individual particles. These measurements involved attaching a single particle to the spring of an atomic force microscope, and then using this instrument to detect the interaction between this mounted particle and a second particle held rigidly on the AFM stage. Progress is restricted by the limited optical microscope facilities currently available to the principal investigator. Specifically, a new instrument is sought that offers an erect rather than inverted image (for micromanipulation), micromanipulation facilities, and sufficient working distance between the objective lens and the sample at high magnifications to permit access for micromanipulation.
