The results from common test methods which are typically used to measure the strengths of engineering adhesive joints cannot be used to establish failure criteria for other designs, nor can they be used to predict the service-lifetimes of joints when exposed to adverse conditions such as cyclically-applied stresses. Thus, there is an urgent need for experimental and theoretical methods which will ensure that (a) new adhesives and adhesively-bonded components can be developed in a sound, logical fashion, (b) good quality assurance methods are available, and (c) the structure will have an adequate service-performance and lifetime. Further, there is an urgent need for sound international standards and design codes on all these aspects. We consider that fracture mechanics has a key role to play in understanding, designing and predicting the behaviour of such adhesive materials and bonded structures. The overall aim of the present proposal is therefore to develop and apply concepts of fracture mechanisms to give materials and design engineers validated failure criterion and models for predicting service-life, and hence to give such engineers the confidence to use adhesives in evermore demanding engineering applications.
