Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to integrate theory-based cognitive modelling (Programmable User Models) with an industrially-based engineering approach to user interface development. The project has linked practical and theoretical components. The practical side involves applying the cognitive modelling technique in real design settings. A researcher will be based with the collaborating software company for substantial periods of time, working closely with design teams as both observer and participant, applying and refining the modelling techniques. Contributions from this side of the work will be the development of the modelling technique in a way that is relevant to the design community and a systematic account of how theory based user modelling can be integrated with design practice. The theoretical side involves developing formal descriptions of user properties that make assumptions about such properties explicit and inspectable and can be used in conjunction with formal descriptions of computer systems to infer properties of the behaviour of the interactive system (involving people and computers). Contributions from this side of the work include an improved understanding of the requirements on formal languages to support cognitive modelling and the development of ways of rigorously analysing the conjoint properties of user-computer systems.
