Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for equipment that will enable the construction of a rig for an experimental investigation into friction-induced parametric resonances in discs and vehicle brakes. The vibration shapes will be investigated as will the effect of friction and pad area (especially with regard to damping). The experimental results will be used to validate the analytical procedures developed under grant J35177 and to establish a physical understanding of the causes of the unstable vibrations in the disc. The contributions to the frictional resistance arising from abrasion, adhesion, deformation and ploughing will be studied and included in the mathematical model so the engineering analysis is strongly linked to the development of new and advanced friction materials and lightweight rotor developments. In addition an experimental programme of work to complement the current analytical research on stick slip vibrations and chaos in discs will be carried out.Key Words: friction, unstable vibrations and chaos, mathematical models, friction materials.
