Thermal analysis (TA) techniques are a well established means of characterising a very wide range of materials. Our feasibility studies show that microwave heating can overcome many of the problems which limit sensitivity and resolution in conventional TA. Furthermore, monitoring of the microwave power absorbed by the sample produces a totally new means of detecting thermally induced processes. This has the potential to provide new information on materials which cannot be provided by conventional TA techniques.We will develop and explore the use of microwave heating and detection in TA and extend the work by using more sophisticated non-linear heating methods which we have already demonstrated can greatly increase resolution.
