Summary on Grant Application Form
Funding is sought for medium scale computing and the development support to extend an existing programme of research into the complex interacting systems that characterise the built environment. Existing research funded by the EPSRC and industry has developed a range of techniques for the analysis and representation of built environment predictive modelling of the outcomes of different decisions. This application is for the major equipment needed to extende this programme of fundamental research into immersive virtual environments. The aim here is not merely to exploit 'passive' visualisation of built environment designs, but, to develop the techniques of analysis and modelling of real environments as tools for helping understand virtual environments, and to integrate scientific visualisation with immersive capabilities in the exploration of new ways of achieving higher quality building and urban designs. Pne of the potentials of VE technology is that it will allow an experimental capacility to be developed to investigate the way that spacial configuration affcts pedestrian space use and way finding. The aim to develop a London based facility for built environment sector firms to review the potentials of new information technologies.
