This proposal is focused on efficiency and emissions and adopts a systems approach to driveline control in which a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a key component. This is consistent with one of the six priority technologies identified by the Technology Foresight Transport Sector panel. There is a further and commercially important consideration in that the system must be controlled to achieve acceptable drivability. The drivability aspects of CVT vehicles are not fully understood. This requirement increases the need for a fundamental investigation of robust control strategies which are easily tuneable to achieve the stated objectives. It will be necessary to produce computer simulation models for the design and comparative evaluation of driveline system controllers. The models will be validated from vehicle and test bed data and the best candidate controllers implemented in the vehicle and a rolling road dynamometer, with emission measurement, and on the test track.
