There is currently considerable interest in nanophase materials, including those whose function is related to their magnetic properties. The proposed programme constitutes a systematic and focused approach to the production of nanophase magnetic systems derived from biological materials. The samples produced will be characterised by a variety of techniques, including electron microscopy, bulk magnetic measurements and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. A key aspect of this characterisation will be to determine their macroscopic and microscopic magnetic behaviour at the bulk, particle and atomic levels, and to examine the inter-relationships between these and the preparation conditions. The ultimate aim is to be able to produce novel nanophase magnetic materials with properties that could be achieved in other ways. It is the intention that these properties will be relevant both for the technological utilisation of the materials produced and for their use as models for improving our understanding of the magnetic properties of nanophase materials.
