Summary on Grant Application Form
The project addresses the problem of the growth of liquid slugs in pipeline systems, this problem being significant in offshore hydrocarbon recovery where large liquid slugs are know to occur and cause separation problems. It is proposed to pursue studies of this area in three closely connected strands, the first of which addresses the detailed processes occurring at the slug tail and the slug front. In the second project area, it is proposed that large scale experiments be conducted on the Imperial College WASP facility in which slug growth in metastable stratified flow, and also severe slugging, are investigated over a range of pressures, geometries and fluid flow conditions. The third strand of the proposed project is concerned with the computation of slug growth and collapse, including severe slugging. This computational work will start by investigating the performance of existing one-dimensional multi-fluid models in predicting slug growth and collapse, for instance, in severe slugging. The second stage of the work will be to develop better models closely linked to the experimental work of the first two strands of the project.
