Summary on Grant Application Form
Novel semi conductor materials which can be processed over large areas have considerable promise for applications, (here, conjugated polymers, to be extended to solution-processible nanocrystals). With improved performance (as LEDs, FETs, photodiodes) and construction of more sophisticated structures (microcavities, waveguides), there is an increased need to control and measure defects and disorder. The optical spectrometer for which funding is requested here will allow measurements of high resolution Raman and luminescence spectroscopy. Raman scattering will be used to provide information about conjugation length in polyacetylene and other conjugated polymers. With the microscope attachment (included in the system) measurements of thin films both in-plane and edge-on will allow characterisation of orientation and ordering. It is also intended to use this spectrometer as the light detection system for a scanning near-field microscope (SNOM), which forms the basis of a separate application to the EPSRC, made by Dr D Richards (Royal Society Research Fellow). This SNOM will be used to reduce or remove the effects of inhomogeneous line broadening in luminescence and Raman scattering or inorganic (III-V heterostructures, nanocrystals) and organic semiconductors. The latter will be have controlled morphologies (achieved by controlled phase separation in polymer mixtures and in diblock copolymers) and will be designed for use on photcells and in photonic structures.
