Summary on Grant Application Form
Accurate knowledge of particle size, morphology and size distribution is vital to the understanding of many process engineering operations. Although numerous techniques exist for measuring particle size, they are often limited to particular particle size ranges and sample characteristics. The Malvern Mastersizer-S is a new instrument from a renowned manufacturer which uses laser diffraction to measure particle sizes over an extremely large size range in liquid-liquid, solid-liquid and solid-gas systems. Purchase of such an instrument would greatly improve the quality of numerous research projects in the department relating to membrane bioreactors for chiral resolutions, waste-water treatment, fluidized bed operations, spray drying and flow visualization studies.
