Summary on Grant Application Form
Overcladding on building results in a cavity between its fabric and cladding system. The cavity environment is influenced by the thermal insulation provided by overcladding and by the moisture migration from the surrounding medium. The nature of this environment and its influence on the conditions created in the building fabric is not well established - there is serious concern that temperature and moisture states may occur in the building fabric, which cause its rapid deterioration e.g. accelerated corrosion in reinforced concrete substrate. The proposed research will monitor and evaluate the cavity environment created by some typical cladding systems and the resulting conditions in the building fabric, which affect its durability. The temperature and moisture conditions created in the fabric by the surround environment will be theoretically modeled and the potential deterioration processes of the fabric evaluated. A performance criteria for overcladding systems will be developed from the results of the study and design guidelines for suitable systems will be derived.
