Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent development of the lightweight glass container forming process has taken place without scientific investigation of the required tooling, Glass container product quality is dependant upon a number of process parameters (e.g. cooling rate, deformation rate, interfacial properties and thermal cycling considerations). To improve product quality the interaction of these parameters with one another and their impact upon the manufacturing process needs to be understood and integrated into the manufacturing system. To establish links and quantify their effect upon quality and process performance a series of techniques will be employed in an iterative process of knowledge building. This information will be used to develop a semi-quantative model in the form of a description of plunger performance and product quality.
