The issue of pollutant formation in flames is central to the area of combusiton research. The present proposal aims to significantly advance the current level of understanding in the area of formation of armoatic compounds in flames. Advances in this area are crucial in the context of formation of mono-substituted aromatics (MSA), poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and soot-all of which constitute key cmbustion generated pollutants. The work is thus of both fundamental and practical interest. The approach taken will be based on the further developemtn of a detailed reaction mechanism and its application to one-dimensional laminar flames, shock tubes and stirred reactors. Extensive validation of the developed mechanism will be made using available data obtained in all of the above geometries. The detailed reaction meachanism will then be systematically reduced to a size feasible for the implementation into practical flame computations. Both the detailed and systematically reduced reaction mechanisms will - for the first time - be used in the investigation of transient effects on the formation of the above pollutants,. It is expected that the generic reaction mechanism produced will be capable of adding crucial understanding to the area concerned.
