Summary on Grant Application Form
We have developed a novel dense, cold plasma source. Furthermore, we have also demonstrated that we can study the spectra of neutral and singly-ionised ions in uniform plasmas at electron densities more than nearly two orders of magnitude greater than has hitherto been possible. This pioneering work was recently published in Physical Review Letters. The purpose of this proposal is to build on this successful foundation by undertaking a thorough characterisation of the source for different materials, making specific comparison of experimental results with state-of-the-art line-broadening codes, improving hydrodynamic simulations of the plasmas production process, and extending the measurements to include simultaneous spectroscopic, electron density, and EOS properties along with measurements of plasma resistivity. We believe this work will be a significant contribution to the field of plasma spectroscopy.
