The objective of the proposed programme is to gain an improved understanding of the effects of in-cylinder catalysts on combustion and pollutant emissions in spark-ignition engines. Emphasis will be given especially to the reduction of unburnt hydrocarbon emissions under lean mixture ratio and cold-start operations. Measurements of exhaust emissions, the composition of the crankcase blow by gases and in-cylinder pressure data will be obtained under steady-state and cold-start operation. The effects on exhaust hydrocarbon emissions of various catalysts, including noble- and base-metal materials will be examined. In conjunction with the experimental programme, a phenomenlogical model will be developed to simulate the flow, mass transport and reaction kinetics of surface catalytic oxidation in the piston-ring-pack crevice; this model will be used to examine the effects of the catalyst surface temperature, the fuel composition and the crevice geometry on the exhaust emissions of unburnt hydrocarbons.
