Summary on Grant Application Form
To adapt an existing Time resolved Raman microprobe, using novel optical concepts, to study the spatially resolved microscopic physics of new ferroelectric liquid crystals and devices. Using this 'fingerprint' mode studies will be carried out on two-dimensional fully bistable organosiloxane ferroelectric and electroclinic materials both in their pure state (surface stabilised mode) and when confined in polymer matrices (PDFLC). With both spatial and temporal resolution of molecular subspecies we will map out precisely the role of (i) interfaces and defects in switching mechanisms and (ii) control of orientation in practical devices. This will then have implications for manufacturing processes.
