Summary on Grant Application Form
In many modern engineered products around 70% of the value is contributed by external suppliers. The extended enterprise describes this in terms of a `product owner' who designs, markets and bears ultimate responsibility for the product but works with a set of `suppliers' who complete much of the manufacture. It is widely accepted that up to 80% of product cost has been committed once concept design is complete. The resultant need to communicate manufacturing constraints to design is complicated when those involved are located in different organisations. Many suppliers of components and sub-assemblies are not selected until after concept design is complete. Suppliers often consider that much of their competitive edge is represented by their manufacturing capability. Communicating this outside of the company, especially when no formal supply contract exists, draws in commercial and legal issues concerning intellectual property rights. This research will define information which describes manufacturing constraints in terms which are acceptable to the suppliers and useful to the product owner. The development of the content of this information as product development proceeds will be investigated. Mechanisms will be developed and tested to capture the required information from suppliers and manipulate and present it to design.
