Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal addresses an important need in the design and analysis of drag dominated offshore structures. A theory will be developed that can be used efficiency to calculate short time series of ocean surface history, designer waves, that induce extreme responses in dynamically responding, space frame structures such as compliant towers and jack-ups. The theatre will allow extreme responses to be calculated accurately and efficiently and significantly facilitate design and assessment. The project will involve (I) the extension of existing theories of extreme values and maxima of random time series; (ii) the combination of these theories with response models for generic structures to allow the derivation of designer waves and exceedance probabilities; (iii) demonstration of the method by application to the calculation of extreme responses of simplified complaint tower and jack-up models; and finally, (iv) some refinements to the calculation of water particle kinematics induced by designer waves.
