The motivation for this proposal is that the distribution of deformation in polycrystalline metals / alloys is affected by interactions between neighbouring grains. In turn they can change significantly the flow stress behaviour and onset of recovery / recrystallisation. The research aims to gain a greater understanding of these short-range interactions, which could have two major commercial impacts: improved process control and fewer production trials for sheet products. The work will be approached in a novel way using fully automated electron back-scatter diffraction (EBSD) in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterise crystallographically 'orientation perturbations' close to grain boundaries and triple junctions. Hitherto, such work involving dislocation structures has been the province of transmission electron microscopy. The new automated EBSD route allows much larger datasets to be obtained from bulk specimens. Moreover, there is increasing awareness in the materials community that morphology and orientation should be combined to understand deformation behaviour. The project will focus on aluminium-magnesium alloys, since they are know to have 'active' interfaces with respect to recrystallisation, and are of commercial importance, plus pure aluminium as a reference material. The main benefit of the work is that it will allow the technology of sheet metal production to be manipulated according to a more scientific basis..
