The principal purpose of the proposed experiment is to measure the X-ray scattering cross section for a dense heated plasma, in which the ion motion is strongly correlated. The dense plasma is to be created by heating a millimetre scale foil with X-rays from a separate laser heated plasma. A further laser-plasma is used as an intense source of line radiation in the 5-10keV range. Line radiation scattered from the heated foil is very weak but can be measured with a CCD detector array system. By measuring the radiation directly through the foil and comparing to scattered signal levels, absolute cross section values as a function of scattering angle can be calculated and compared to theory. The importance of this work lies in the fact that dense strongly coupled plasmas occur in a variety of situations from astrophysical objects to dense parts of laser ablated plumes. Such plasmas cannot be modelled with analytical equations and generally , computer simulation results are sought. The assumptions made in obtaining these can be tested by comparison of the experimental scattering profiles with those obtained from theoretical models.
