Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to develop a comprehensive analytical approach, based on a proper generalisation of the nonlinear sigma model, to mesoscopic phenomena in disordered superconductors, and to apply this approach for describing the thermodynamics of small (mesoscopic) and bulk superconducting samples. In detail we will: construct a technique suitable for a self-consistent description of fluctuating observables in dirty superconductors; apply this technique for investigating mesoscopic fluctuations of the local superconducting order parameter; show how these fluctuations affect behaviour of the critical magnetic field, Hc2, and other thermodynamic observables, use this to explain experimentally observed behaviour of Tc(H) and to suggest possible new experiments, look for experimental signatures of mesoscopic fluctuations near the superconducting-insulator transition.
