Summary on Grant Application Form
A major problem facing reinforced concrete structures is degradation caused by the ingress of water carrying chlorides. There are two primary methods of arresting chlorides: by hydrophobic surface treatment to limit water ingress, and by direct ion immobilisation with pozzolanic binders. A multidisciplinary team has been assembled to apply the innovative non destructive technique of broadline MRI coupled with multinuclear MAS NMR spectroscopy, which has a proven capability of providing non inferred information needed to advance significantly the understanding of water and ion transport and their control mechanisms in cementitous materials. Key proving experiments have already been performed; broadline MRI has quantitatively visualised both water and absorbed polymer in cementitous material, giving information on water transport and dynamics in surface treated mortars; 27Al and 35Cl MAS NMR spectroscopy has given information about the binding of chlorides to the alumina bearing phases of pozzolanic additives.
