We propose to investigate in detail the effect of externally induced atomic coherence and of externally modified dissipation on the spectral response of an atomic medium. We aim to put forward the most favourable range of parameters to render a medium nonabsorptive and to allow the amplification of coherent high frequency light without the need of providing a large amount of population in the excited state. In order to obtain intuitional insight initial calculations will concentrate on the steady state regime of the atom laser interaction, partly within the parameter domain that allows a dressed state analysis. A large part of the proposed work is also concerned with a time dependent analysis that includes pulse shape effects of the involved laser fields so that the interplay of coherence versus dissipation can be understood in more detail. For the sake of a more realistic model we will furthermore consider the effects of neighbouring levels not directly involved in the coherent interaction and the effect of counter-rotating terms. Much emphasis will also be placed on the fluorescence of the atom due to the applied atomic coherence and how to modify it via suitable environment. This work is intended to present means to control absorption and fluorescence in an atomic medium, which can be a disturbing property for many applications and to allow high frequency lasing, which at present is still inefficient and expensive.
