The water industry has traditionally assumed that all water taken is required, and have ensured provision meets demand. However, rising demand and unusual climate patterns have led to shortfalls and restrictions in many UK regions in recent years. The economic and environmental costs of new supply development are high and this has created an interest in water demand management and leakage reduction strategies. This proposal seeks to investigate the potential of demand side management in ensuring that water resources are managed sustainably, meeting supply needs without impairing the function of aquatic systems to dispose of waste and support life. Water resource supply and demand will be modelled to 2025 under a range of economic, demographic and climate scenarios. Individual modelled elements include an existing regional supply model, a recently developed mocrosimulation of water demand model, and an industrial demand model to be developed under this proposal. The latter model will be capable of investigating the beneficial impact of waste minimalisation best practice and price elasticity of demand on water use. The research is expected to benefit the water industry and its regulators, domestic, industrial and commercial water consumers, recreational water users and the ecology of aquatic systems.
