A large number of important biological networks are thought to develop indeterminately in response to environmental signals. Under realistic conditions, the environment is heterogeneous and dynamic, and the resultant form of the network governs its functioning. Network patterns are therefore a consequence of mechanisms which represent a compromise between plasticity in such a variable environment, and network functioning. Existing continuum models do not properly address the fact that small scale interactions play a role in determining large scale form. We aim to develop models which reconcile the behaviour at these differing scales. In particular, we will study the mechanism of network patterning in the context of two biological systems which contrast in their spatial coherence and hence in processes by which global structure is modified by local heterogeneity.
