Summary on Grant Application Form
The increased interaction length and homogeneity of state of the art long (0.11 metre) fibre Bragg gratings offers the possibility to dynamically address the local phase of the grating thus modifying their characteristics and achieving new and exciting effects. Techniques to alter the phase include resonant absorption and thus refractive index change in rare earth doped fibre gratings, acoustic interactions, electro-optic and optical nonlinearity. Application of these effects include all-optical switching, pulse processing and control as well as gap solitons. This proposal aims to explore the physics of these new processes and devices.
