Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to study the interaction of topological defects and shear by exploring the generation flow of defects in thermostropic liquid crystals under controlled surface anchoring conditions. This is a fundamental experimental programme in a largely unexplored area of non-equilibrium physics. The results of this research programme are also expected to have longer term implications for liquid crystal devices. The two-year programme involves the deign and fabrication of a shear cell, the control (using existing resources) of liquid crystal orientation on the two inner surfaces of the cell and the characterisation of shear-induced effects by optical microscopy and image processing.
