Summary on Grant Application Form
We are aiming to develop catalytic systems in which acceleration is achieved by simultaneous nucleophilic (pushers) and electrophilic (pullers) catalysts. This is a considerable challenge as normally strong nucleophiles react with strong electrophiles and annihilate the reactivity of either partner. We intend to study the Baylis Hillman reaction and aim to develop lanthanide catalysts with oxophilic ligands (this may give rise to ligand accelerated catalysis and also self-assembling catalysts) around them so that they do not react with nucleophilic amines. Thus, pushers and pullers would be working in concert to promote and enhance the rate of the reaction.
