Summary on Grant Application Form
The microbial ecology of activated sludge waste-water treatement systems is poorly understood due to methodological limitations in the classical microbiological techniques of culture and microscopy. New molecular techniques (in-situ hybidisation, polymerase chain reacton, denaturing gradinet gel electrophorensis ) can quantify and locate a specific target organism thus allowing the function of the system to be linked to particular organisms. This knowledge is of paramount importance in efficient design and running of wastewater treatment plants. The proposed research attempts a synthesis of these techniques. If successful, the microbial basis of wastewater treatment can be addressed.
