This proposal offers an exciting opportunity to investigate an integrated optics technology that could have a vast impact upon a variety of industries due to excellent performance at low cost. Many integrated technologies are currently under consideration, the most favoured being in III-V compounds, silicon based compounds such as SiGe or silica or silicon studies. The proposed technology in SiC has advantages over all these having the potential for the high speeds of the III - Vs, and compatibility with advances in silicon based technologies, at potentially low cost of silica, together with low cost processing. Furthermore the technology is more environmentally robust than either of the other technologies, and is transparent over a greater useful wavelength range. The proposed research programme aims to demonstrate low loss waveguides, and optical modulation at high speeds in a waveguide structure, two key elements in an integrated optics technology, although integrated optics in SiC has numerous others. Consequently the technology will be extremely advantageous for the users and manufacturers of optical sensors such as manufacturing and process industries (greater wavelength range including short wavelengths for high resolution), the optical storage industry (routing of visible wavelengths ), or any optical signal processing application.
