The invention of electroluminescence will be exploited to produce low cost light emitting displays. The charge transfer adducts of tetrathiafulvalene, tetrathiatetracene and tetracyanoquinodimethane will be synthesised by either electrocrystallisation of chemical methods. Preliminary investigation indicates that the wavelength of light emission can be tuned simply by changing the counterion. The adducts will be dissolved in suitable solvents and coated onto indium tin oxide/glass or transparent conducting polymer coated polyester (to produce flexible LEDs). Top contacts will be made by vacuum evaporating a metal or alloy. An understanding of the mechanism of the nature of the light emission from these adducts and the operations of the devices therefrom, will be used to scale the devices up to 10cm x 10cm with a brightness of at least 4,000 Cdm in red, green and blue colours.
