Summary on Grant Application Form
Polymers can form complexes with sugars and nano-particles and the aim of this research is to discover the dynamic processes whereby these structures are formed and break up. Several novel systems will be prepared including a-cyclodextrin and poly(ethylene oxide) (polyrotaxanes) both in solution and adsorbed/grafted to nanosized silica particles. The polymers will be chemically modified to cap the threaded sugars once formed. NMR self-diffusion, small-angle neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations will be used to investigate these systems. The use of these complexes to quantify polymer bridging and the formation of surface loops will be investigated.
