Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of this work is to construct an improved design of photothermal deflection absorption spectrometer that will allow measurement of low levels of optical absorption coefficient (down to 1 cm-1) in thin solid films. This will be used to measure optical processes in polymeric semiconductors that are poorly understood, but which are of fundamental importance and which can control the operation of a range of semiconductor devices (light-emitting diodes, photovoltaic cells). These include singlet-triplet exciton transitions, dimer (or aggregate) states, and charge-transfer excitations at heterojunctions formed between electron-accepting and hole-accepting polymer semiconductors.
