Summary on Grant Application Form
A negative Poisson's ratio material has the counter-intuitive property that enables it to contract (expand) in one direction when compressed (stetched) in orthogonal directions. The damping or energy dissipation mechanism in such materials is not understood but it has been observed that the loss tangent (damping) is much higher in these materials. By considering the cyclic internal energy behaviour of unit cells with negative Poisson's ration a study will be carried out of how damping can be enhanced in structures composed of such cells.
