Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to develop and apply a new theoretical and experimental method for determining the phase and amplitudes of the Fourier coefficients of crystal potential by measurement of the geometry of the intensity distribution in few beam convergent beam electron diffraction patterns. In particular, a systematic means for determining the phase by direct inspection of three beam CBED patterns of centrosymmetric crystals will be developed. This will provide a completely new and direct approach to determining (1) the structure of a crystal, where the structure is unknown and (2) the electronic structure within a crystal of known structure.
