Summary on Grant Application Form
Nitrification and denitrification of wastewaters will be studied in a biological reactor capable of matching oxygen supply to ammonia loading.Sub-optimal oxygen concentrations and pH will encourage formation of intermediates, e.g. nitrite and dinitrigen oxide, at significant concentrations. Off-gas analysis will be used to determine some of the nitrogen compounds. Metabolic flux analysis will be used to quantitatively describe the nitrogen transformation. The results will indicate whether a low energy nitrogen removal route for biological wastewater treatment is possible via nitrite and dinitrogen oxide, rather than nitrate.
