In domains where multidisciplinary teams collaborate in tasks and decision making, one important aspect of computer support is the provision, communication and integration of information. One such domain is neonatal intensive care. Here, the need for collaboration arises because it is different team members have different expertise and responsibilities, and because teams and team members must hand over responsibility for the care of patients at various times e.g. sift changes. The cognitive demands upon individual team members are considerable, because of the need to: understand complex information from monitoring devices; to receive and communicate information to others, and to respond rapidly to change. With the introduction of computerised monitoring systems, the quality of information about physiological indicators is improved but paradoxically the provision of more and more detailed information may increase the cognitive demands of people. This project will use two complementary approaches, Hierarchical Task Analysis and Experimental Cognitive Psychology to investigate information flows and decision making in neonatal intensive care. A better understanding of the cognitive demands placed upon neonatal intensive care team members will contribute to the theory of group decision making and also inform design in the computer support range of complex tasks executed by teams.
