A new method for the generation of heterocyclic azomethines is proposed. This is based on a decarboxylation process with a key feature being stabilisation of this pathway by exploiting the properties associated with N-acyl iminium ions and enolates. This methodology aims to provide an efficient and flexible route to a comprehensive library of new heterocyclic 1,3-dipolar building blocks that will serve to extend significantly the current state of the art.
