At present there is no validated method to compute solar irradience and illuminance from other routinely measured weather parameters. This is of major importance to the development of better weather datasets for building services engineering, where hourly simulation methods are now seen as essential for realistic energy analysis of innovative building designs (low energy, passive solar, mixed mode, intelligent light switching and new methods of daylight distribution). The proposed research would provide such a method and therefore address a long-standing need. Solar radiation reaching the earth depends on a number of atmospheric variables, including aerosols, ozone, water vapour and mixed gases. The proposed hourly irradiance and illuminance model is unique in its ability to use weather variables such as fractional sunshine, pressure and dry and wet bulb temperature. The value of further refining the method using rainfall and other weather observations will also be explored.
