Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme covers the development of a range of novel optoelectronic devices, and their electrical and optical integration. Emphasis will be placed on two wavelength regions, (a) the 1-1.55um band for telecommunications applications, for which we propose to explore the properties of several III-V semiconductors, in strained and unstrained combinations, and (b) the visible-UV band, a longer-term programme aimed at exploiting the potential of diamond optoelectronics. The devices to be studied include Fabry-Perot and waveguide modulators, vertical cavity surface emitting lasers, photodiode and phototransistor detectors and microwave heterojunction bipolar transistors and hot electron transistors. Integration will be investigated either monolithically or by using an optical interconnect layer. This programme has been structured as a set of inter-related project areas:i) strained InP-based devices for 1.55 um;ii) long wavelength microresonator devices;iii) integration of microwave and microresonator structures;iv) optical signal recovery using HBTs;v) accurate modelling of integrated optical waveguides and devices;vi) optical interconnects for wafer-scale ICs, andvii) diamond devices for high performance detectors.
