The ultimate goal of this proposal is to make time-resolved measurements of vibrational relaxation in laser gain media. To facilitate such measurements it is necessary to grow high quality crystals containing isoelectronic dopants V3+ and Cr4+ (3d2 configuration), Cr3+ and Mn4+ (3d3 configuration), Ce3+ (4fl) and Yb3+ (4f13) in appropriate halide, oxide and fluro-apatite crystals. These crystals will be characterised using optical absorption, photoluminescence and radiative decaytime measurements. A vibrational relaxation time spectrometer will be designed and constructed around a Coherent RegA 9000 Ti-sapphire system permitting pump-probe measurements of transient absorption using the optical Kerr effect. Pump beam pulses (50-100 fs) in the impulsive limit will be used to excite samples. The probe beam after passing through the sample and analysing polarizer will be detected using a spectrograph and OMA from which a 3 dimensional plot of the transient absorption versus wavelength and time will be recorded. These measurements should resolve whether coupling to local modes or to lattive phonons are important in non-radiative relaxation of selected photoexcited ions in laser crystal and give quantitative measurements of their associated energies and dynamics.
