The efficient operation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC's) for the clean generation of electrical power relies upon many factors. There is now a consensus that lowering the operating temperature of the fuel cell brings many benefits, including the relaxation of criteria for the selection of materials for the balance of plant. Although suitable electrolyte materials are available for lower temperatures of operation (eg CGO and LSGM), the electrode kinetics are much slower particularly at the cathode and this can present problems. The aim of this programme is to optimise cathode performance by understanding the fundamental processes occurring during normal operation of the cathode. This will be done by studying 18o isotopic exchange with a range of cathode structures. Parameters that will be varied are: cathode composition, including A-site deficient perovskites; cathode microstructure and deposition process. Conventional and high resolution SIMS analyses will be used to obtain 18o distributions. SIMS analyses will be used to obtain 18o distributions about the relative importance of surface and bulk oxygen transport under equilibrium and operating condiitons. Finally optimsed cathode structures will be tested to validate any models derived.
