The Glasgow team will build an orthogonally persistent system for Java. Java is a new objected-oriented language that is rapidly gaining popularity. Orthogonal persistence ensures that all data structures, whatever their type, are preserved for as long as required. The PJava system will provide the same safety guarantees and space management for long-lived data as Java currently provides for transient data. PJava will make it much easier to build continuous-operation servers to which support network services presented by mobile Java applets. PJava will manage limited duration inter-store references, large volumes of data and flexible transactions.Sun Microsystems Laboratories have committed US$210,000, supplied a well configured Sun workstation , are taking one of our team as an intern this summer and are investing US$60,000 of staff time in working with us. Laser Scan Ltd will work with us develop an understanding of the value of Java to their geographic information systems and are contributing 60,000 in software and staff time.
